Severed heads, hands found at Ciudad Juárez bar
Ciudad Juárez --
In this violent border town just across the Rio Bravo from El Paso, Tx., police made a grisly discovery early this morning. Two human heads and four hands were found in the parking lot of a nightclub, Bandoleros. The establishment is located only blocks from U.S. territory.
The victims have not been identified, but are believed to be between 25 and 30 years old. Police are scouring the area, searching for the rest of their bodies. A press report said the hands were restrained at the wrists in handcuffs.
Because of its proximity to the U.S., Juárez is a daily battleground for drug cartels determined to control routes across the border. In March a U.S. narcotics trafficking expert told a congressional committee that the city remains the most dangerous in the world. U.S. drug czar tells House of Representatives that Juárez is still deadliest city.
Police in Juárez are themselves often the target of narco violence. Early this year a cartel promised "one dead cop a day," prompting the city manager to move all local forces into fortified hotels, where they could be better protected when off-duty. Even so, officers have been ruthlessly hunted down and killed since then.
