Federal troops take over police functions in Veracruz - 1,000 local cops dismissed
Veracruz, the City of Cadavers (http://mexicogulfreporter.blogspot.com/2011/12/more-bodies-are-dumped-in-veracruz-city.html), no longer has a local police force. Due to widespread corruption in metropolitan departments, effective today all policing within the city and immediately adjacent communities, which comprise an area known as Veracruz-Boca del Río, will be carried out by Mexican troops. A federalized approach to community policing is an excellent idea, in my opinion, and proves why those presidential candidates who say they would remove the military from the drug war are simply talking nonsense. One of those who has so advocated is PRI's Enrique Peña Nieto (http://mexicogulfreporter.blogspot.com/2011/11/pris-likley-presidential-candidate.html).
According to the Mexico City newspaper El Universal, all 900 officers of the Veracruz metropolitan police force, together with about 100 civilians, were simply terminated today. Talk about the Grinch who stole Christmas -- that's a lot of people to release, and apparently without any advance warning, just before the holidays. According to the paper, all of the former employees of the now "extinct" Veracruz-Boca del Río municipal corporation will receive the benefits to which they're entitled under Mexican law, including the mandatory aguinaldo, or Christmas bonus check (usually two weeks pay).
The PRI governor of Veracruz state, Javier Duarte de Ocho, urged the public to remain calm, and assured them that the temporary reliance upon federal forces for local policing will enable the government to recruit, hire and train an entire new metropolitan police force. It will take a long time to replace 1,000 local cops, especially since everyone hired first must be polygraphed (http://mexicogulfreporter.blogspot.com/2011/10/weeding-out-corrupt-local-cops-remains.html).
Now, if Governor Duarte de Ocho would just resign as well: http://mexicogulfreporter.blogspot.com/2011/10/make-believe-world-of-veracruz-governor.html.
Note: An average municipal police officer in Mexico earns $300-$400 USD per month.
