Mayor of Monterrey Refuses to Resign, Pledges to Fight Organized Crime
Mayor Fernando Larrazaba has rejected resignation demands following the brutal August 25 arson attack against Monterrey's Casino Royale which killed 52 persons. He referred to the demands as "un chantaje en contra mi gobierno" -- an "extortion attempt against my administration." An interesting and rather curious choice of words by the mayor, since the owners of the casino reported receiving extortion demands from presumed drug cartels in the days before it was torched. See my posting below for more details on that.
Earlier this week Mexico's PAN President Felipe Calderon had called on both Larrazaba and Nuevo Leon Governor Rodrigo Medina to give up their posts so that the investigation into the arson attack could be conducted free of political overtones.
No dice, says Larrazaba.
